In today’s world, anxiety and depression are often labeled as a “chemical imbalance.” The conventional approach suggests that if we just correct these imbalances with medications, we’ll be fine. But if that were true, then medications alone would completely resolve anxiety and depression, right?
I personally have taken medications in the past and have worked with clients who have been prescribed them, yet they still struggled with anxiety and depression. Why? Because medications don’t address the root cause.
Anxiety & Depression: A Response to Fear
Anxiety and depression are not just conditions to be managed—they are signals, responses to what we are focusing on. The Bible tells us:
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7
Fear is what keeps us in a state of survival, also known as the sympathetic state of our nervous system. When we dwell on fears about our health, finances, relationships, career, or family, our minds trigger a physical response.
Fear causes:
✅ Racing thoughts → Anxiety
✅ Hopeless thoughts → Depression
✅ Muscle tension, headaches, low energy, or heaviness in the body
Our thoughts directly impact our nervous system, shifting us into a stress response that fuels anxiety and depression.
Why Medication Alone Won’t Fix It
Medications like SSRIs (such as Prozac) or TCAs for depression work by increasing the absorption of neurotransmitters like serotonin and norepinephrine. But here’s the problem:
❌ Medications do not change our thoughts
❌ Medications do not remove fear
❌ Medications do not take us out of survival mode
If our thoughts remain focused on fear, we stay stuck in anxiety and depression—no matter how much serotonin is circulating in our brain.
Shifting Focus From Fear to Faith
I recently experienced depression myself. I felt defeated, exhausted, and overwhelmed. Fear crept in, and as I focused on it, I felt tension in my body, which led to a migraine and drained my energy.
Then, I realized what was happening. Instead of remaining stuck in fear, I shifted my focus—and my entire state changed.
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.” — Isaiah 26:3
When I shifted my focus from fear to faith, from defeat to God’s promises, I went from:
💭 Defeated → At Peace
😖 Tension → Relaxation
🥱 Exhausted → Energized
No medication needed. Just a shift in mindset, faith, and nervous system regulation.
You Already Have the Tools Within You
God has equipped us with everything we need to overcome anxiety and depression—not through external substances, but through His truth, His peace, and His Spirit within us.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:6-7
You don’t have to stay in survival mode. You don’t have to live in fear. You already have the tools within you to regulate your nervous system and shift your mindset—you just have to learn how to access them.
