Stress is a normal and natural part of life, but when it becomes chronic and unmanaged, it can take a toll on our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. As followers of Christ, we are reminded that while stress exists in this fallen world, God has given us tools to overcome it.

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)

Understanding how stress impacts our nervous system and adrenals can help us better steward our health. More importantly, we can find true peace not just through physical strategies but through reliance on God’s Word and His presence in our lives.

The Mind-Body-Spirit Connection

God created our bodies with a sophisticated system to respond to stress. When we experience a thought or emotion, it activates specific areas of the brain, particularly the amygdala, which signals the hypothalamus—the control center of the autonomic nervous system and endocrine system.

This system helps us react to challenges, but when stress becomes chronic, it can lead to imbalances that affect our body, mind, and spirit. The good news? God has not left us without a way to restore balance. He calls us to live in His peace, trusting Him rather than allowing fear and anxiety to control our lives.

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3)

The Autonomic Nervous System: Designed by God

The autonomic nervous system regulates many of our body’s functions, including heart rate, breathing, digestion, and immune responses. It has two main branches:

  • The Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS): The “Fight or Flight” response, designed by God to protect us in times of danger.
  • The Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS): The “Rest and Digest” response, which helps us recover, heal, and function optimally.

The Stress Response in Action

When the amygdala perceives a threat, it activates the SNS, signaling the release of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones prepare the body to respond by increasing heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure. This response is necessary at times, but chronic activation leads to:

  • Increased inflammation
  • Digestive issues
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Anxiety and fatigue

On the other hand, when we operate in faith and peace, our PNS is activated, promoting healing, digestion, and immune function. God’s design allows us to shift from stress to peace, but we must be intentional in choosing trust over fear.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

The Four Stress Responses and Biblical Truth

In response to stress, our bodies react in four primary ways:

1. Fight | Reacting with anger or control

When faced with stress, we might become aggressive, controlling, or defensive. While God designed the fight response to help us stand firm in danger, chronic activation leads to burnout and relational conflict.

Biblical Response: “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:14)

2. Flight | Escaping and avoiding

The flight response makes us want to run from problems. While fleeing danger can be necessary, avoiding challenges or responsibilities leads to fear-driven decision-making.

Biblical Response: “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

3. Freeze | Feeling stuck or overwhelmed

This response causes paralysis, making us feel helpless or unable to act. Many experience this during trauma or overwhelming life circumstances.

Biblical Response: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.” (Isaiah 41:10)

4. Fawn | People-pleasing and over-accommodating

The fawn response drives us to please others at our own expense, often leading to exhaustion and resentment.

Biblical Response: “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?” (Galatians 1:10)

How to Regulate Your Nervous System with Faith

Chronic stress can lead to symptoms such as:

  • Anxiety, depression
  • Digestive issues (constipation, bloating)
  • Hormonal imbalances (PMS, infertility)
  • Chronic fatigue and pain
  • Insomnia and headaches

But God gives us tools to manage stress in a way that honors Him:

  1. Prayer & Surrender – Instead of trying to control everything, surrender your worries to God. Listen to my podcast episode “Find Resilience + Strength Through Prayer” on Radiant + Resilient (Apple, Spotify). “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6)
  2. Deep Breathing & Stillness – Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to pray. Take time for deep breathing and stillness before God.
  3. Gratitude & Worship – Shift your mindset from stress to gratitude. Worship and thanksgiving activate the PNS, calming your body and spirit. Listen to my podcast episode “Resist or Be Grateful for What Is” on Radiant + Resilient (Apple, Spotify)
  4. Community & Support – Surround yourself with faith-filled people who remind you to trust God, not stress. “Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)
  5. Nourish Your Body – Eat whole foods, get enough rest, and move your body. God calls us to steward our health well. Listen to my podcast episode “How the Enemy Uses Food to Tempt Us” on Radiant + Resilient (Apple, Spotify)
